Experienced researchers currently working closely affiliated with management held open talks that were thought relevant to all participants. First up was Dr. Jane Lubchenco of NOAA (National Oceanic bay of fundy tides and Atmospheric Administration), USA. She gave a very interesting lecture where she focused on "marine spatial planning" in the United States, and how scientists need to communicate the benefits of preserving ecosystems and biodiversity to the rest of the population. New values she referred to as "ecosystem services" and includes access to food and opportunities for recreational activities. Finally, she summed up the preliminary knew the consequences of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and thanks partly bay of fundy tides Norway for valuable advice about a deepwater leak.
The speeches of thematic sessions bay of fundy tides are more specific to the academic communities bay of fundy tides and here were presented ranging from new methods, current projects and results for new ecological theories. Among the topics discussed were: Invasive species variation in natural mortality in populations Climate variability, responses and comparisons of marine ecosystems in the Northern Hemisphere Marine biodiversity - research and management needed to meet obligations in 2010 Fiskeriindusert evolution
For example, presented Tore Johannesen (HI) a theory he called "The benefits of being eaten". This is a new theory that describes how predation on phytoplankton can actually benefit prey if the circulation of nutrients occurs at the micro scale and propagation occurs by cell division (asexual).
Powered Fisheries evolution is a growing field. Also this was discussed at the conference. Today's fishing methods targeting large fish because smaller fish are often not as valuable commodity. It is generally believed that size at maturity is hereditary, and the fish become sexually mature and use their energy to growth rather than reproduction will be more likely to get caught up before they can reproduce. How will our resource use could alter the terms of natural selection. This can lead over time to populations consisting of small fish. How long this trend will take is unknown, and there is great uncertainty about whether it will be possible to reverse the process again.
Wednesday night was the view of the wonderful film "Oceans" by Jacques bay of fundy tides Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud. The film is highly recommended. It is so beautiful and touching that I laughed, sat silent admiration and tears of despair when I saw it. However, as a footnote, I would probably recommend the French version, as it is not necessary to understand what little they are saying and Disney has acquired the rights for the Americanized version and have cut off the "unpleasant" parts about shark fishing and whaling.
ICES (International Council for Explaration of the Seas) is the International Council for havforsknig. The coordinates and promotes research on oceanography, the marine environment, the marine ecosystem, and on living marine resources in the North Atlantic. Member states now include all coastal bay of fundy tides states bordering the North Atlantic (including Norway) and the Baltic Sea and some affiliated member countries in the Mediterranean and in the Southern Hemisphere bay of fundy tides (www.ices.dk). ICES advisory commity (Advisory Committee) is the primary source of scientific advice to support the management of coastal and marine areas.
A terrific place! Thank you so much for intriguing abstracts Silje! Small gift wrapped and sent today :) Reply Delete
